The publisher

Books made at low tide — when the water pulls back and the territory appears.

Who makes it

Costa-Santos was founded in Salvador by Uiler Costa-Santos, a visual artist and photographer. The name is the editor’s, as with Steidl, MACK or Bessard: in a photobook house the catalogue is a signature, and whoever signs it answers for what goes in.

The research behind the publisher is Sizígia (2017–), on the Black Atlantic, unfolding in visual chapters between Bahia and Cape Verde — Coroas (2018–) and Barlavento (2020–) among them. The work has shown at the 13th Bamako Biennale, Africa Foto Fair and the Museu de Arte da Bahia, and received the Funarte Marc Ferrez Photography Prize (2024) and the Pierre Verger National Photography Prize (2021–22).

Since 2015 Uiler has taught photography as a tool of memory, belonging and imagination. The publisher continues that teaching by other means: to form authors and put the book in their hands.
